Find My Loved One Dementia Support

Get your loved one home safely, every time.

The ‘Find My Loved One’ scheme is designed to keep those living with dementia, Alzheimers, and similar conditions, safe in the Lichfield District community. People with dementia are provided with a range of devices (either a wristband, lanyard, or keyring fob) that contain a small Near Field Communication (NFC) chip.

When dementia means someone you love could go missing.

If someone you care for has dementia, you already know the fear. A trip to the shops, a walk round the block, a moment when they slip out of sight, and suddenly your mind runs through every worst case.

It’s not just frightening for you. For the person themselves, being lost and unable to explain who they are or where they live is deeply distressing. And when a stranger or a paramedic finds someone confused with no way to identify them, it can mean hours in an ambulance or a hospital bed that could have been avoided.

You can’t watch someone every minute of every day. But you can make sure that if the worst happens, help is only a tap away.

How Find My Loved One helps:

  • Peace of mind, wherever they are. Knowing your loved one is wearing a device that can identify them, even when you’re not there, takes some of the weight off.
  • A quicker, kinder response. Anyone who finds someone lost or confused, a member of the public, a shopkeeper, a paramedic, can tap the device with a phone and see who to call.
  • More independence, not less. Rather than restricting where someone can go, the device gives them the confidence to stay active in their community, and gives you the confidence to let them.
  • No fuss, no tech to learn. There’s no app to open, no location tracking, and nothing to charge. It’s a wristband, lanyard or keyring that just works.

How it works:

  1. Pop into the Grace Cares hub.
  2. We’ll talk through what to include: a name, a short message like “I have dementia”, and an emergency contact number.
  3. We add it to your chosen wristband, lanyard or keyring on the spot, using NFC (near field communication) technology. It’s stored only on that device, nowhere else.
  4. Wear it, clip it to your keys, or wear it round your neck, and you’re covered.

If your loved one is ever found lost or confused, anyone with a smartphone can tap the device and immediately see the information you’ve chosen to share, including who to call. It’s recognised by local emergency services, so it’s often the first thing they check.

Why this matters?

Nearly a million people across the UK are living with dementia, and most live in their own homes and communities, not in care settings. That’s a lot of people at risk of becoming lost or disoriented, and a lot of families carrying that worry quietly.

That’s why Lichfield District Council has funded 2,000 of these devices, working with Grace Cares and local dementia support organisations including Alzheimer’s Society, Magnolia Friends and Dementia Support to get them into the hands of the people who need them.

“We want people living with dementia to be able to remain active and independent in their communities, while giving their families and carers some additional reassurance.”
Councillor Richard Cox, Cabinet Member for Community and Public Protection, Lichfield District Council

“For families and carers, the thought of someone they love becoming lost or confused can be incredibly frightening. This is a simple piece of technology, but it can provide an important extra layer of reassurance and, most importantly, help someone get safely back to the people who care for them.”
Emma Smith, Grace Cares

Your questions, answered:

  • Is it really free? Yes. There’s no cost to you at all, thanks to funding from Lichfield District Council.
  • Do I need to book? No. Just come along to Grace Cares, Unit 2, The Portal, Elmhurst Business Park, Elmhurst, Lichfield, WS13 8EX, Monday to Friday, 10am to 3pm. We’ll get you set up while you wait.
  • What if I’m not sure how to set it up? You won’t need to. Our team will talk you through it, help you decide what information to include, and hand you the finished device before you leave.
  • Is there any risk to sharing this information? The information is stored only on the device itself, never in an app or a central database, and it doesn’t track location. You choose exactly what it shows.
